Jewelry Eye Implants; A New Trend?
Although it is currently illegal in the United States, implanting platinum jewelry into your eye may become the next big trend!
A new procedure has allowed Lucy Luckayanko to have a piece of platinum jewelry implanted into her eye. Although eye jewelry has not yet been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the American Academy of Opthalmology, Dr. Emil Chynn, a medical director of Park Avenue Laser Vision, where the surgery took place, claims the procedure is safe.
According to Chynn, the platinum piece of jewelry is very thin and was designed for insertion onto the top of the eye. Chynn says the piece will not sit directly in the eye, so there will be no risk of blindness or other health problems. He says his patient may experience a bit of local bleeding, however, that will go way within a couple of days or weeks and antibiotics will prevent any type of infection from developing.
The FDA and AAO are claiming that there isn’t enough sufficient evidence that supports the safety of the procedure and is warning consumers about the dangers of undergoing the procedure.
